Common Chemicals Found in Deodorants

Aluminium chloride, aluminium zirconium, aluminium chlorohydrate and aluminium hydroxybromide, do these words raise a big red flag in your mind? Well, they should! These commonly used chemicals in antiperspirants not only stain your skin and clothes they are proven to be harmful neurotoxins which studies (Source 1, Source 2, Source 3) have linked with conditions like Alzheimer’s disease and breast cancer.

What’s worse is that while aluminium is not normally found in our body, using antiperspirants daily can deliver a direct dose of chemicals into your system.

So why on earth do we insist on rubbing these harmful compounds directly into our pores and glands for our body to absorb?

Non-Toxic Deodorant

Deodorants and Antiperspirants Are Not The Same Thing

Despite what people may think, deodorants and antiperspirants quite simply are not the same thing. So, what’s the big difference?

Well on the one hand, antiperspirants use chemical compounds like aluminium salts to block or clog your pores to prevent you from sweating, ultimately altering your body’s normal function.

On the other hand, natural deodorants like the range stocked at Cleanse Skincare are designed to create an environment that prevents the bacteria on your skin from having a wild party and stinking up the joint. Which means your pores and glands are free to breathe, and your body can continue its natural cleansing process.

Fun Sweaty Facts About Deodorant

Fun Sweaty Fact #1 – Your sweat doesn’t actually smell. What causes BO (body odour) is the bacteria that start munching on proteins in the sweat. They break down the proteins into acids and that’s what smells.

Fun Sweaty Fact #2 – Women have more sweat glands than men. But the men’s are more active and that is why they sweat more.

Fun Sweaty Fact #3 – Stress sweat smells worse than exercise sweat. This is because it comes from different glands where the sweat has a higher percentage of proteins and fats compared to exercise sweat. The bacteria go nuts for the extra protein and fats and gorge on it like its Christmas dinner.

Tips for Switching To Natural Deodorant

Getting accustomed to natural deodorant may take a little bit of adjustment. After years of using toxic brands you may find that it will takes a little while to adjust. But don’t give up! It will get easier and most people report less sweating while using a natural deodorant long term.

Applying deodorant on open skin? That’s a big no-no – this includes skin that has just been shaved. Our tip? Shave at night and then only apply your natural deodorant the next morning.

Staying healthy on the outside, starts with the what you put inside. Try to keep your diet as free from foods with preservatives and make sure you top up on green veggies - you might even find you don’t need much deodorant at all.

If at first you don’t succeed, try and try again. You might find that you have to try a range of natural deodorants before you find the one that works for you. But don’t give up, we assure you it’s worth the effort.

Natural Deodorant that works

Will I react to Natural Deodorant?

We have had a handful of reports from customers who develop a rash using deodorant pastes. Sometimes it’s just the Black Chicken Axilla Paste, other times, they’ll react to any of them. There are two potential things that will cause this, despite them being a totally natural formula.

Essential Oils

They are potent and powerful and hard working in these deodorants, but occasionally they can cause sensitive skin to react. The Soapwalla deodorant has a strong formula, which is why it works so well. However, the combo of lavender, tea tree, sweet orange, peppermint, and bergamot can be too much for some noses and some skin. This is why we have also sourced the milder Sensitive skin deodorant stick from Schmidt’s which includes a fragrance-free formula with no essential oils at all.

Bi-carb Soda

This is more likely to be the cause of the skin irritation and unfortunately, it’s a common ingredient in many formulas. It’s really quite rare, but it happens enough that it’s worth knowing about and if you are concerned then patch testing for several days before you end up with two completely itchy armpits. You can either patch test with one of the products, or make a rudimentary paste from some bi-carb, coconut oil and rub it on your skin in the same spot for a few days. If you react to the bi-carb, we suggest you use one of the specially formulated for sensitive skin from Schmidts. They are formulated using magnesium hydroxide to neutralize odour instead of baking soda.
